MILADY HARTMANN

D E S I G N E R - S C U L P T O R

BACKGROUND

I am an American/Canadian artist of Caribbean and European (Haitian and French)

heritage. My multi-cultural background has certainly influenced my work and subject

matter. Throughout may life I have had the fortune to travel, it has permitted migrate

and adapt in the United States and Canada.

My educational endeavours have allowed me to study at Parsons School of Design in

New York City,—BFA- Haute Couture, Nyack University, —Organization Management,

MA, Nyack, New York. Through out the years I began to work different sectors in the

industry such as, film, television, Metropolitan Opera House, fashion houses and more.

As time progressed I created a family and built a successful children’s toy design business

for over 15 years, Brownstone Playhouse Inc. Due to designing in the children’s sector

and the art of story telling through toys it has lead me to further develop another

business “Mylady.Milady” focusing on art and industrial design with adult themes.

ARTISTIC JOURNEY

Textile is the substratum of my craft and practice. Paper is the supporting structure and

construct of my sculptures. The fusion of textile and paper forms a balance of linear and

curvature forms in which they inhibit. My experiences in haute couture, toy design, doll

making, painting, faux-finish, theatre, scenic and production design are apparent in my

work. The creation of the 3-dimensional works reference architectural elements, fauna

and flora in my sculptures through storytelling are defiantly my forte.

INSPIRATION

My work influences of Haitian and French, folk and ornate , architectural designs stems

from that history. I am driven by culture, people, ornate architectures as well as fauna

and flora as they are the thread that weaves those elements together to incorporate

reality and fantasy in my art and design works.

The dubious and anthropomorphic sculptures behooves us to question the perception of

transformation and the understanding of people’s humanity and culture through

decadent objects as elegance and decadence.
